This paper is devoted to get new recurrence relations satisfied by the single and product moments based on Progressively Type-II Censored (ProgT-II) from the three parameters Weibull-Rayleigh distribution (WRD) and doubly truncated WRD. Finally characterizations of the WRD based on these recurrence relations, hazard rate function and truncated moments are discussed.Publisher's Versio

Wave attenuation in partially filled unsteady pipe flow

    Get PDF
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Much research activity is carried out to reduce water consumption for domestic purposes. This leads to the possibility of reducing the amount of water introduced into building drainage systems. However, an accurate estimation of the flow attenuation within building drainage pipes is of great importance to prevent solid eposition and subsequent blockage. The research is focused on the field of subcritical flow in partially-filled pipes. Experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out to study the wave attenuation in the following configurations encountered in drainage pipe systems: i) A simple pipe, ii) A pipe subject to one concentrated lateral inflow, iii) A pipe with gate fixed at the downstream section, generating an interaction between wave and backwater profiles. In the present study the Saint-Venant equations are derived in their general and characteristic forms. A number of numerical procedures for solution of the Saint-Venant equations are reviewed, and the rectangular grid characteristics method, diffusing scheme and Strelkoff's implicit method are chosen to solve the equations. The stability of the finite-difference methods used is investigated for free-outfall and controlled outfall boundary conditions. An experimental installation consisting of 0.105 m diameter uPVC pipe is used to investigate the characteristics of the flow and to form test cases for the numerical methods. Comparisons between computed and observed depth hydrographs, peak depths and depth variations along the pipe are made for subcritical flow in a pipe of slope 1/300. The rectangular-grid characteristics method and the diffusing scheme are also applied to supercritical flow. Flow tests are undertaken for supercritical flow in a pipe of slope 1/200 to validate the use of these methods. The investigation revealed that the attenuation rate of peak depths is affected by the volume of the waves. The implicit method is the most suitable method, dealing efficiently with most problems encountered in drainage pipe systems of flat slope. The diffusing scheme can model the attenuation of supercritical flow within building drainage pipes.Financial support from the ORS Award Scheme, Mechanical Engineering Department of Brunel University and Egyptian Government are acknowledged

Abstract

Background

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), platelet derived endothelial cell growth factor/thymidine phosphorylase (PD-ECGF/TP) and leptin are known as potent angiogenic factors The objective of the study was to evaluate these angiogenic factors VEGF, PD-ECGF/TP and leptin in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and the factors that lead to angiogenesis in such cases.

Methods

Sixty CHD children were studied and divided into two groups (n = 30); cyanotic-CHD (C-CHD) and acyanotic-CHD (A-CHD). Twenty five healthy children were included as controls.

Results

Significantly higher serum levels of VEGF, PD-ECGF/TP activity and leptin were detected in patients with CHD, particularly in patients with C-CHD. CHD patients with SpO2 <90%, pulmonary hypertension (PH), severe pulmonary stenosis (PS), detectable collaterals, cardiomegaly and/or heart failure showed significantly higher levels of these factors than those with higher SpO2 or those without these findings.

Conclusion

Hypoxia, PH and PS are important factors that lead to harmful angiogenesis. However, angiogenesis could be essential in some cases of CHD as coarctation of aorta to enhance renal perfusion. This may provide new ways for therapeutic strategies aiming at reducing or promoting angiogenesis in CHD to improve patient's outcome.</p

Intercropping represents ways of maximizing water use efficiency (WUE) for higher yields per unit of irrigation water applied. The field experiments were carried out at the Experimental Farm of Arab El- Awammer Research, Station, Assiut during the two successive growing summer seasons of 2017 and 2018, to study the effect of different irrigation regimes (120, 100 and 80% ETo) and intercropping systems (sole sunflower, sole common bean and intercropping sunflower and common bean) for enhanced productivity and net economic return under drip irrigation. Irrigation with 120% ETo treatment gave higher yield and its compounds and oil % compared to 100 and 80% ETo treatments for sunflower and common bean. The highest stem, head diameters and 100-seed weight and seed and oil yield produced with sole sunflower as compared with intercropping of sunflower with common bean which had the lowest values in both growing seasons. The highest values of IWUE (0.723 and 0.704 kg/m3) were obtained at intercropping under irrigation with 100% ETo. Values of land equivalent ratio of various intercropping systems were larger than one in the intercropping systems. Sunflower + common bean cropping system produced higher values of net return than sole sunflower and sole common bean. The highest net return (2709 US/ha)wereobtainedwhenirrigatedsunflower+commonbeanintercroppingsystemwith120/ha) were obtained when irrigated sunflower + common bean intercropping system with 120% ETo in the second season while the lowest net return (234 US/ha) were obtained when irrigated sole sunflower with 80% ETo treatment in the first season. Study of plasma adiponectin level in patients with metabolic syndrome

    Get PDF
Background: The metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of interrelated common clinical disorders, including hypertension, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and dyslipidaemia, in addition to obesity. Central obesity accompanied by insulin resistance is a keyfactor in the development of metabolic syndrome (MS) and future macro vascular complications. Adiponectin is the most abundant peptide secreted by adipocytes, being a key component in the interrelationship between adiposity, insulin resistance and inflammation. Hypoadiponectimia has already been associated with the risk of the MS in several populations. Plasma adiponectin level was measured in the current study to clarify its role as a biomarker for metabolic syndrome (MS).Methods: This study was conducted on 40 MS patients (Group I) compared with 20 age and sex matched healthy volunteers (Group II). All patients and controls were subjected to full medical history, clinical examination and laboratory investigations in addition to plasma adiponectin level. Results: Plasma adiponectin levels were significantly lower in subjects with MS when compared with subjects with no diagnosis of MS. There was significant negative correlation between plasma adiponectin and age, waist circumference, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, insulin resistance, serum insulin, and triglycerides. Also there was significant positive correlation between plasma adiponectin and HDL.Conclusion: We conclude that adiponectin levels could help as a biomarker for cases of MS.
